    NEYS Team Captain Interest?

Please let your swimmer know that we will be electing captains on Thursday, Nov. 10. If they are interested in being a captain, they should look at the criteria below, and inform one of the coaches they would like to be considered.

    Team Captains’ Selection

Each year four team captains will be appointed in the manner as follows:

    1. The coaches will choose two captains (one male, one female).
    2. Swim team members will elect two captains (one male, one female).
    3. Individuals who wish to be a team captain must inform and receive permission from the head coach to be considered for the position.
    4. Candidates will be allowed to make a short speech to the team prior to voting; however, no campaigning will be allowed at any time.
    5. Seniority is NOT considered, and previous captains are not guaranteed a spot. Previous captains are still expected to demonstrate leadership when necessary and keep the well being of the team in high regard.

    Captains’ Minimum Qualifications

    1. At least 13 years of age by December 1st (age up date for the league).
    2. At least 1 previous season on the Nazareth YMCA Swim team.
    3. Be willing to abide by all Captains’ responsibilities.
    4. MUST make at least 3 dual meets.
    5. MUST attend practice at least twice per week in some capacity.
    6. MUST be willing to attend end of season championship meets.
    7. Demonstrated maturity.

If #’s 3-7 are not met, you may be removed as captain and/or not receive the Captain’s certificate.

    Captains’ Responsibilities

    1. Relay team concerns to the coaches.
    2. Assist in maintaining team morale, such as leading cheers.
    3. Lead team stretching.
    4. Implement the coaches’ directives.
    5. Maintain positive working relationships with parent volunteers and assist in marshaling when necessary.
    6. Assign meet and practice set-up/tear down activities to team members in a fair and consistent manner (lane lines, backstroke flags, scoring table, timing devices, deck & pool debris clean up, chairs, tables). Although the parents mostly do this in meets, you will still need to attend to some of them in practice, and to assist during meets.
    7. Always set a good example in your actions on and off the deck, in and out of the pool.
    8. Provide support to our younger swimmers, inspire our older swimmers.
