COVID Exposure/Close Contact Protocols

Close contact is defined as being within six feet of the person for more than 15 minutes within a 48-hour period. Although we do implement some COVID mitigation strategies during swim practice, there are times when swimmers are standing within 3 feet of each other during a practice session. Also, since COVID can be spread 2-3 days prior to symptoms, if the coaches determine that your swimmer was likely in close contact according to the definition above, implement the following:

If your swimmer is NOT vaccinated:

  • Get tested within 3-5 days of exposure; do not attend practice in the meantime.
  • If negative & no symptoms, the swimmer may return to practice after the 7th day of exposure. Why still quarantine if there is a negative test? This is due to the COVID incubation period, so to be safe, it's after day 7 for return.
  • If positive, follow your doctor's instructions, but generally you must quarantine for 14 days if no symptoms are shown.
  • If you do not get your swimmer tested, and if they show no symptoms, they may return to practice after the 10th day of exposure.
  • If showing symptoms, get tested, isolate, follow health professional's instructions as length of isolation and course of treatment may vary depending upon the severity. If tested positive with symptoms, minimum expectation is quarantine for 14 days, return to practice only if 72 hours with no symptoms, and health care professional's approval.

If your swimmer IS vaccinated:

  • Get tested within 3-5 days of exposure; do not attend practice in the meantime.
  • If positive, but showing no symptoms, isolate for 10 days. You may return to practice after the tenth day if still showing no symptoms.
  • If negative & showing no symptoms, return to practice.
